A 4K UHD movie can involve higher resolution, wider colour, brighter highlights, darker shadow detail, dynamic HDR, lossless audio and object-based surround sound. That is why two files marked as “4K” can behave very differently.
HDR is the umbrella term. HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG are different HDR formats, each with different support across discs, televisions, streaming apps and media players.
For a serious digital movie collection, the important question is not simply whether a film is 4K. It is what kind of 4K it is, what HDR format it uses, what audio it contains, how it has been mastered and whether your playback setup can handle it properly.
This guide explains the key terms without drowning you in jargon. It also shows why the right file format, media server and playback device matter when converting DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD collections into a private digital library.
Most consumer 4K UHD video is 3840 × 2160 pixels. That is four times the pixel count of Full HD 1080p. But resolution is only part of the story.
The best 4K UHD Blu-ray discs can also include HDR, wider colour, high bitrates and lossless audio. Those elements often make a bigger visible and audible difference than resolution alone.
4K UHD can show finer detail, especially on larger screens and projectors where lower-resolution sources become easier to spot.
HDR can improve highlights, contrast and colour depth, making the image feel more natural, dimensional and cinematic.
Many Blu-ray and 4K UHD discs include lossless audio formats that can outperform standard streaming audio when played through the right system.
HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. In plain English, it gives video more room for brightness, contrast and colour than traditional SDR video.
HDR10 is the common baseline HDR format. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are both premium HDR formats that can use dynamic metadata, meaning the picture can be adjusted more intelligently scene by scene or frame by frame on compatible displays.

Dolby Vision can look superb, but compatibility can be messy. A disc, file, app, media server, player, HDMI chain and TV all have to agree. Many Samsung televisions support HDR10 and HDR10+ rather than Dolby Vision, so this is worth checking before buying a new TV for a home cinema or media-server setup.
Audio is where many digital movie collections either shine or fall apart. DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD discs can contain very different sound formats, from basic stereo to full lossless object-based surround.
For home cinema systems with an AV receiver, surround speakers and height channels, preserving the right audio track can be just as important as preserving the picture.

In simple terms: if you have a premium AV setup, you probably do not want every disc converted into a basic stereo or compressed surround file. You want the important audio options preserved where possible.
For high-quality disc-to-digital work, the file container matters. MP4 is excellent for broad device compatibility, remote playback and smaller universal-device copies. But MKV is usually the stronger choice when the priority is preserving the disc structure as faithfully as possible.
MKV can hold the main feature, multiple audio tracks, subtitle tracks, chapters and language options in one file. That makes it especially useful for Blu-ray and 4K UHD collections where the original disc contains lossless audio, Atmos, DTS:X or multiple subtitle options.

This is the part people often discover too late. A file may contain Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or Dolby Vision, but that does not guarantee your chosen device, app or TV will play it correctly.
Apple TV, NVIDIA Shield Pro, Fire TV, Roku, Google TV, smart TV apps and specialist media players all have different strengths and limitations. Some are excellent for polished streaming-style use. Others are better suited to full-quality home cinema files and AV receiver playback.
Great for convenience, but often limited when it comes to advanced audio passthrough, subtitle handling and full home cinema formats.

Read guideNot every 4K UHD Blu-ray was mastered in native 4K. Some films are finished from a 2K digital intermediate and then upscaled for UHD release.
A 2K digital intermediate is the finished master used during post-production. Many modern films, especially effects-heavy films, have historically been completed at 2K because visual effects, grading and mastering workflows were built around that resolution. The final UHD disc can still look excellent, but it may not be sourced from a true native 4K master.
Other factors also matter, including HDR grading, bitrate, compression quality, film grain management, restoration work and audio options. A well-authored upscaled UHD can still look excellent. A poor native 4K release can still disappoint.

A small DVD collection for casual viewing is a very different project from a large Blu-ray or 4K UHD collection intended for a cinema room, NAS, Plex server or whole-home media system.
For some clients, a clean MP4 library is the right answer. For others, an MKV feature copy is essential because the collection includes lossless audio, subtitles, language tracks, extended cuts and premium home cinema playback.

No. HDR is the broad category. Dolby Vision is one type of HDR. HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG are other HDR formats.
Samsung has historically backed HDR10 and HDR10+ rather than Dolby Vision. That means a Samsung TV can still be an HDR television, but Dolby Vision content will normally fall back to HDR10 or HDR10+ depending on the source and playback chain.
Dolby Vision can be better because it uses dynamic metadata, but the result depends on the disc, display, player and mastering quality. A well-mastered HDR10 disc can still look excellent.
A 2K digital intermediate is a finished production master created at roughly 2K resolution during post-production. It is common on effects-heavy films because visual effects, grading and mastering workflows have often been completed at 2K to manage cost, time and processing demands. The final UHD Blu-ray may still look excellent, but it is upscaled from that 2K master rather than sourced from a native 4K master.
Yes, if you have the right speaker setup or sound system. Atmos can add height and object-based effects, but it is only as good as the mix and playback equipment.
