Those labels are a sign that the DVD may contain footage that started life on tape. The memories may already have been through one rescue process, but they may still not be easy to watch today.

If you find discs like this in a drawer, loft box, inherited collection or old family archive, they are worth treating carefully.

Why MP4 is usually the practical final step

MP4 is one of the most useful formats for family videos because it works across a wide range of modern devices.

Once your DVD has been converted to digital MP4, the video can usually be watched on a computer, phone, tablet, smart TV, media player or shared with relatives more easily than a disc.

• MP4 files can be copied to USB drives.
• They can be backed up to another drive or cloud storage.
• They can be shared with selected family members.
• They are easier to organise into folders.
• They can be used for short clips, tribute videos or family films.
• They do not rely on a DVD player being available.

The original DVD can still be kept. Converting to MP4 does not mean throwing the disc away. It simply means the memory is no longer dependent on that one physical copy.

DVD is not bad, but it is no longer enough

This is not about saying DVDs were a mistake. They were a very useful step in the preservation journey.

But a disc is still a physical object. It can be damaged, misplaced or become unreadable. It also depends on suitable playback equipment, and that equipment is becoming less common in everyday homes.

How to decide which tape-to-DVD copies matter most

If you have a large box of old DVDs, you do not have to deal with everything at once. Start with the discs that look most personal or irreplaceable.

What if the original VHS tapes are gone?

In many cases, the original tapes were thrown away after being copied to DVD. That means the DVD may now be the only surviving version of the family footage.

That makes the DVD more important, not less.
